In the opening edition, the 30 soldiers come together for the first time, with platoon commander Lt Tom Drew throwing them in at the deep end with a week-long exercise in the Brecon Beacon mountains where the Riflemen undergo a competition scrutinising their fitness and mental resilience.

The soldiers start training for Eastern European combat and their first challenge is urban warfare, where new corporal Jack Sherborne leads an assault on a mock-up village on the Salisbury Plain Training Area. Soon after, they are deployed to a Nato training area in Germany for a month of Eastern European battle preparation in their Warrior armoured fighting vehicles, tank-like machines that can carry riflemen inside.
